If you're like most pet owners, you consider their pets as part of the family. That makes it especially difficult to leave their pets at a boarding school when you go on vacation. In addition, you miss the opportunity to share some fun and exciting experience with their furry friends.
Fortunately, many hotels now allow pets to stay in rooms with their owners. Call ahead and ask when booking. Some properties charge a small fee for pets in the room. This is understandable when one considers the time spent in cleaning pet hair from furniture.
If your pet is accustomed to having a rug or blanket to sleep, then by all means go. This makes your pet feel more "at home" and comfortable in a new environment. They know where they are supposed to lie, because they have their family element to designate the space that is "theirs". If your pets are crate trained, has the perfect "baggage" to carry. My own spoiled terrier sleeps in bed at home, so always bring an old sheet to cover the hotel bedspread, which protects its shedding.
Visit new areas can be very exciting for your pet. Dogs tend to pull a strap more when they have so many new places and absorb odors. When I undertake a walk with my dogs in a new environment, typically changes from a collar to a harness. It causes less stress to the neck of dogs and gives me a sense of security that one approaches the edge of a lookout or maybe a bridge. It may be silly, but I need to transport a dog back up to safety, I know that the harness does not slip off.
Always carry plenty of fresh water for your pets in a plastic container with a tight fitting lid. A gap smaller container fits easily into a backpack and can be filled with its own supply of bottled water. It is so important to hydrate the animals as it is to hydrate. You may want to put a couple of tough dog "cookies" in your pocket to reward your pet to be as good traveler.
Avoid a diet change, while on the road. Different types of foods you usually eat your pet can cause gastric distress, as you can add lots of "samples" of their own meals. If you choose to ignore this advice, you may have a roommate more fragrant than expected. This can be especially serious in a vehicle during a storm, when you can not open the windows. Play it safe.
For the most part, pets are happy simply because they are with you. With full days of exploration, both of them to sleep, when the day has come to an end and wake up ready to experience a new day full of experiences to share.
